Music Therapy
Music Therapy brings together a client’s musical interests and skills with functional music-based therapeutic strategies to improve cognitive skills, emotional well-being, social connection and physical health. A board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) assesses an individual’s areas of strengths and weakness in designing goals and treatment objectives to bring about desired change and to improve a client’s quality of life.
Music Therapy goals could include:
- improving attention and concentration
- processing and responding to information
- improving memory and recall
- strengthening communication skills
- stimulating problem-solving and decision-making
- improving divided attention
- responding to multi-step directions
- identifying and regulating emotions
- practicing coping skills including relaxation
- developing leisure interests and reengaging in community interests
Clients are encouraged to suggest use of their preferred music and to use pre-existing and newly-developed music skills within the Music Therapy sessions, in-house and within the community.
